Undoubtedly, 2020 was a rough one for many, but 2021 is full of opportunity. To help you get the year off to a flying start, we’re presenting our “I Am Potential” series — articles designed to help you succeed, thrive and prosper in 2021.

The year 2021 is here, and it’s waiting for you to map your blueprint for the months ahead.

Are you dissatisfied with your life? Are there aspects of your current existence that no longer serve you? The start of a new year is a natural time to implement changes that can impact your outcomes in dramatic ways.

It all starts with a strategy. And when you’re putting your strategy together, seek inspiration from the experiences of those who have achieved lasting success. Their stories can help you get a clear understanding of what human potential is all about.

With that in mind, we’ve reached out to a few top athletes to hear about their plans for starting fresh in 2021. These stars are — or have been, at one point — top contenders in their respective sports. They’re also Fresh N’ Lean partners who’ve had great success integrating our meal plans into their daily regimen.

Meet retired racecar driver Danica Patrick

Born in Wisconsin, Danica Patrick got her first taste of racecar driving at the age of 10, when her parents bought her a go-kart. After claiming the top spot in regional and national competitions, she left the Midwest at 16 to make a name for herself in European road racing.

Her success since then has been the stuff of legend. In 2005, she finished fourth in her first Indianapolis 500, becoming the first woman to score a top-five finish in that historic event. Then, in 2008, she won the IndyCar Series Indy Japan 300 race. That victory made her the first woman to take the top spot in a major-league open-wheel race in a North American series.

Danica eventually transitioned into the NASCAR Cup Series. There, she went on to break the record for the most top-10 finishes of any female in the event’s history.

This icon of her sport closed out her time in racing in 2018. With a string of successes behind her, she holds the distinction of being the most successful female in the history of American open-wheel racing.

These days, Danica is a successful entrepreneur and business owner, with her own vineyard and clothing line. She’s also authored a successful book and hosts a popular podcast.

Here’s what Danica Patrick had to say about her successes, inspirations and plans for the future:

1. Finally, 2021 has arrived. What steps did you take to close out 2020 physically and mentally strong?

There was a lot more eating and drinking at the end of the year due to the holidays. I tried to be a bit more regimented, and I tried to maintain a certain balance. I paid more attention to my diet.

2. Can you share one resource (for example, a book, article, Instagram post or quote) that’s helped you become a better version of yourself?

I liked “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One” by Joe Dispenza. I also liked “The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself” by Michael A. Singer. I love reading and researching. I love consuming information through podcasts and YouTube, and expanding my mind through other people. I’m learning more and more about the importance of taking accountability for myself and my reality.

3. Please tell us about the routine you follow each day.

Any time you want to have something come out well, it’s important that you map out a plan. So, if I want to make sure that I get a lot of things done in a day, I just plan it. I think there’s a power in writing things down.

4. If you could choose only one word for 2021, what would it be?

My word for 2021 is patience. Getting into my body and experiencing what I’m truly feeling in a situation requires patience.  We also need patience for life, patience for all the things going on, patience for people. Patience is one of those things that is always very respectful. It helps me get into my body and feel situations instead of being reactive.

5. How do you reset when you feel like you need to get back on top of your game?

Nature is the most grounding, healing reset for me. That means taking a walk, being out in the woods, going to the ocean or lake or whatever you have around you. Getting out into nature always gives you a fresh perspective. Listening to the animals, listening to the birds, hearing the wind blow through the trees. I think nature is a natural reset. And if you don’t have that, I think a good workout is a great reset.

6. What role does food play in your life and overall success strategy?

One thing that’s always been important to me is food. Nourishing myself with things that make me feel a lot of energy is essential to me. For me, there was a big difference when I stopped eating gluten and dairy; that change boosted my energy. That’s why I eat foods from Fresh N’ Lean’s Paleo meal plan; those meals follow that dietary guideline.

7. What other steps do you take to help make sure you’re always at your best?

Getting some physical activity is always good. Working out is helpful. And then just surrounding yourself with people that are positive, optimistic and have a good outlook on life.

8. How do you define potential?

Potential is something that someone could achieve if they put all the right resources behind it. Potential is limitless. It all comes down to how much energy, thought and embodiment we put into something – that’s what helps us create it.

The start of a new year is a perfect time to take stock and recalibrate.

Are you happy with where you are in life? If not, you have the chance to change course. To get the ball rolling, you’ll need to set goals and create a plan that can help you realize your objectives. Regardless of where you want to go and what you want to achieve, there’s one fact that always holds true: You and you alone have the power to make your dreams a reality.

To remain inspired as you set off down this path, look to the stories of those who have transcended obstacles to achieve greatness in their lives. Their triumphs and struggles can be your teacher, guiding you toward a life filled with greater fulfillment and success.

With that in mind, we’ve reached out to a few top athletes to hear about their plans for starting fresh in 2021. These stars are all top contenders in their respective sports. They’re also Fresh N’ Lean partners who’ve had great success integrating our meal plans into their daily regimen.

Meet tennis champion Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens is a tennis player who is one of the brightest lights in her sport. Based in Florida, she’s the child of athletes; her mother was an All-American swimmer at Boston University, and her father was an NFL running back.

Tennis entered Sloane’s life when she was just a child; she first discovered the sport at the tender age of nine. In the years since, her skill was nurtured and developed, and she went pro in 2009. Her wins so far include a U.S. Open title, and she’s just getting started.

Here’s what Sloane Stephens had to say about her successes, inspirations and plans for the future:

1. Finally, 2021 has arrived. What steps did you take to close out 2020 physically and mentally strong?

Obviously, 2020 was so crazy. So, I think 2021 is going to be kind of crazy as well. I made sure my body was good and my mind was right, and I did everything I could to get refreshed for another crazy year. I’m happy to be able to work out and still do the things I like to do.

2. Can you share one resource (for example, a book, article, Instagram post or quote) that’s helped you become a better version of yourself?

On Instagram, my two favorite accounts are We’re Not Really Strangers and The Good Quote. They both post a lot of real-life stuff that’s totally relatable.

3. Please tell us about the routine you follow each morning.

I like to work out fairly early. At around eight, I’ll have breakfast. Then I’ll shower, get ready and prepare to face the day.

4. If you could choose only one word for 2021, what would it be?

Gratitude.

5. How do you reset when you feel like you need to get back on top of your game?

I’ll do an at-home spa, do a little face mask, steam my face. I’ll take a long shower. I take more time for myself when I need to reset my body and mind. Then I can get back to where I was and refocus.

What I personally did during quarantine was build a gym in my garage. That meant I didn’t have to go anywhere to work out – I had everything right there. I worked out every day. I really enjoy working out at home now, which I never did before.

7. How do you define potential?

I feel a lot of people have so much potential, but they just don’t execute on it, or they don’t work hard enough. There are things holding them back. I see a lot of potential in so many people, even myself. The best thing we can do for ourselves is strive to do more.

8. When did you realize your potential to become a champion?

I knew I was good at tennis. I knew that a goal of mine would be to win a tournament. So, I just worked hard until I got there and tried to do the best I could.  Obviously, being a professional tennis player is not an easy road. There’s a lot of competition, but the end game is to be the very last person standing. And sometimes it doesn’t happen. But I think the passion and the drive you have for your sport is what keeps you going.

9. How should the people reading this article harness their potential? And how can they become winners at what they do?

You have to work hard, and you have to be dedicated to whatever it is that you’re doing. In sports and in life, there are many things that take hard work and dedication. You also have to have passion for whatever it is you’re doing. At the end of the day, that’s the one thing that will keep you going.

10. You’ve committed a significant part of your life to your sport. What specific moments make all your sacrifices worth it?

I love winning. The journey is not easy, but it’s super cool to look back and see what you’ve done. And then say, “You know what? I can do more. And I’m going to push myself to be better.”

11. In your opinion, what has been the most pivotal moment of your career?

I had a foot injury that required surgery. I didn’t know if I would ever play again afterward – everything was a huge question mark. Then I recovered, and I was able to play in five or six tournaments. One of those tournaments was the U.S. Open, and I won – I would have never thought that would be possible after not playing for 11 months due to an injury. That experience changed the course of my life. It impacted how I think and the level of belief I have in myself.

12. In your opinion, what makes an athlete great?

The things that make an athlete great are desire, passion, working hard and love for your sport.

Next steps

Josh Herrin is a motorcycle racer who’s been winning championships since he was 14 years old. He shares tips that can help you succeed and achieve.

Fresh N’ Lean is the nation’s largest organic meal delivery service. Our tasty, chef-prepared cuisine is always fresh and never frozen, and we offer five convenient meal plans: Protein+, Keto, Paleo, Standard Vegan and Low-Carb Vegan. Undoubtedly, 2020 was a rough one for many, but 2021 is full of opportunity. To help you get the year off to a flying start, we’re presenting our “I Am Potential” series — articles designed to help you succeed, thrive and prosper in 2021.

How will you reinvent yourself in 2021?

The start of a new year is a great time to reshape your narrative. You are the one in charge of your life story. What areas of your life would you like to change in 2021? By setting your intentions and developing a plan, you can put yourself on a path that leads to greater happiness and fulfillment.

When you’re putting your plan together, look to the life stories of those who have overcome the odds to achieve towering success. You can learn from every stride and stumble they’ve experienced, and their path can inspire you to chart a course that helps you realize your potential.

With that in mind, we’ve reached out to a few top athletes to hear about their plans for starting fresh in 2021. These stars are all top contenders in their respective sports. They’re also Fresh N’ Lean partners who’ve had great success integrating our meal plans into their daily regimen.

Meet motorcycle racer Josh Herrin

Josh Herrin is a motorcycle racer from Glendale, California, who went pro in 2006. He’s been competing at a world-class level from a very young age; he won the 2004 USGPRU 125 title when he was just 14 years old.

In 2010, he achieved a major career milestone when he won the renowned Daytona 200. He was just 19 when this happened, and that made him the second-youngest rider to win this race. Josh currently competes in the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship.

Here’s what Josh Herrin had to say about his successes, inspirations and plans for the future:

1. Finally, 2021 has arrived. What steps did you take to close out 2020 physically and mentally strong?

I trained as much as possible and tried to stay healthy so I’d be ready for 2021.

2. Can you share one resource (for example, a book, article, Instagram post or quote) that’s helped you become a better version of yourself?

I like Gary Vaynerchuk’s (GaryVee) Instagram!

3. Please tell us about the routine you follow each morning.

I’m not a big breakfast guy, so in the morning I go for some fruit and granola. I watch some old races to get focused. I follow it up with a good lunch and always remember to have fun.

4. If you could choose only one word for 2021, what would it be?

Opportunity.

5. How do you reset when you feel like you need to get back on top of your game?

I ride mini bikes. I can always count on them to have fun and make me feel good about riding again.

I was lucky in 2020 and didn’t have any physical issues. I’d say my biggest fitness-related challenge has been overcoming my back problems. I had multiple herniated discs that were causing me tremendous amounts of pain and issues on the motorcycle. Stretching, core exercises and nutrition helped me feel like a new person!

It’s a constant challenge to stay away from Chick-fil-A. Fresh N’ Lean helps a lot!

8. How do you define potential?

Potential is working hard and being ready for opportunities when they are least expected.

9. When did you realize your potential to become a champion?

Growing up in a sport, you don’t ever realize your potential. You are born into it. You just have to perform if you want to be a champion.

10. How should the people reading this article harness their potential? And how can they become winners at what they do?

Work hard and never give up. Don’t be afraid of criticism. Always believe in yourself.

11. You’ve committed a significant part of your life to your sport. What specific moments make all your sacrifices worth it?

The moment that makes it all worth it is seeing other people get stoked when you win.

12. In your opinion, what has been the most pivotal moment of your career?

The most pivotal moment was when [former professional motorcycle racer] Ben Bostrom told me being marketable and good to the fans are just as important as winning.

13. What failure are you proudest of?

Going to the Moto 2 World Championship. It was the worst year of my life, but I came back a different person and racer.

14. In your opinion, what makes an athlete great?

The thing that makes an athlete great is perseverance.

Next steps

Josh Herrin knows that to get results, you have to stay the course. Use his winning strategy as you plan your own blueprint for success.

1. Finally, 2021 has arrived. What steps did you take to close out 2020 physically and mentally strong?

I revisited the goals I set for myself early 2020. And I made sure at the best of my abilities to complete and pursue them.

2. Can you share one resource (for example, a book, article, Instagram post or quote) that helped you become a better version of yourself in 2020?

The book “Boundless “ by Ben Greenfield has amazing insight on fitness, nutrition, bio-hacking and health.

3. Please tell us about the routine you follow each morning.

Usually, I start with a meditation, and I set my intentions the day. I make sure everything is lined up, from workouts to meals, recovery and emails. And I take steps to ensure everything is prepared.

4. If you could choose only one word for 2021, what would it be?

Opportunity.

5. How do you reset when you feel like you need to get back on top of your game?

Most likely, I’ll get some sleep and proper nutrition. Or spend a day at the dog beach with my dog.

Since I’m a professional fighter and a personal trainer, I need access to a gym. Getting that access was hard last year due to the pandemic.

Thanks to Fresh N’ Lean, I have not faced any.

8. How do you define potential?

I define potential as confidence and believing in yourself. We all have potential, but it takes confidence to unleash it.

9. When did you realize your potential to become a tournament-winning fighter?

As a kid, I was always a superior athlete and competitor. I would fight and compete against older guys and win.

10. How should the people reading this article harness their potential? And how can they become winners at what they do?

Love what you do. Train at your craft every day.

11. You’ve committed a significant part of your life to your sport. What specific moments make all your sacrifices worth it?

The moment that makes it all worth it is getting my hand raised after winning the fight.

12. In your opinion, what has been the most pivotal moment of your career?

The most pivotal moment was winning my first world title in 2013!

13. What failure are you proudest of?

My first professional loss. I was 9-0 as a young pro, and I suffered my first loss. At first, I took it hard, but it only drove me to push harder. I came back stronger from it.

14. In your opinion, what makes an athlete great?

The thing that makes an athlete great is the ability to adapt to any scenario. Also, discipline and diligence.

Next steps

After a year during which the pandemic has affected his ability to get the gym access he needs to train, Mike Lemaire is working harder than ever to come back strong in 2021. Take inspiration from his focus and ambition as map your own unique path to victory. .

Undoubtedly, 2020 was a rough one for many, but 2021 is full of opportunity. To help you get the year off to a flying start, we’re presenting our “I Am Potential” series — articles designed to help you succeed, thrive and prosper in 2021.

It’s official: 2020 is history.

The year 2021 has dawned, and with its arrival comes the opportunity for a fresh start.

With the new year still in its infancy, you have the perfect opportunity to draft a road map for change in your life. What would you like to improve? What transformations would you like to make? Now is the time to take a look at what’s working in your life and what isn’t. This new year brings with it the chance to make a potent and life-changing reset in the areas that matter most.

As you’re putting your plan together, take inspiration from the life stories of those who have beat the odds and triumphed. Every setback and subsequent redemption that they’ve experienced holds a lesson that can help you reach your full potential and live your best life.

With that in mind, we’ve reached out to a few top athletes to hear about their plans for starting fresh in 2021. These stars are all top contenders in their respective sports. They’re also Fresh N’ Lean partners who’ve had great success integrating our meal plans into their daily regimen.

Meet baseball pitcher Jimmy Nelson

Today, we’re connecting with baseball great Jimmy Nelson. Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Jimmy was drafted in high school to play in the majors, but he put those plans on hold for a college education. Since then, he’s played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for teams such as the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jimmy Nelson signed to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, but lumbar surgery prevented him from playing a single game during the season. For 2021, this extraordinary pitcher is focused on recovering from his injury and returning to his sport stronger than ever before.

Here’s what he had to say about his successes, inspirations and plans for the future:

1. What steps are you taking to start 2021 physically and mentally strong?

I’m continuing rehab and training here in Florida. And I’m making sure I’m ready come spring training 2021. Also, I’m spending time with the family — we don’t always get to spend time together during the season.

2. Can you share one resource (for example, a book, article, Instagram post or quote) that’s helped you become a better version of yourself in 2020?

Anything by Ryan Holiday and David Goggins. Both of those authors have solid reads.

3. Please tell us about the routine you follow after a workout.

After a workout, I make sure to refuel and do some breath work. I also start the recovery process, which can include many things: contrast baths, H-Wave, hyperbaric/oxygen chamber, meditation, etc. Work hard, recover hard.

4. If you could choose only one word for 2021, what would it be?

Resiliency.

5. How do you reset when you feel like you need to get back on top of your game?

I find some alone time to reflect and clear the mind. I also spend time with family to refocus on what’s important. It’s important to trust your routine, move on from and learn from mistakes, and use what you’ve learned to your advantage.

The big challenges have been injury, surgery, rehab and getting back into training after having to take off months after surgery. And overall, overcoming the last three-plus years of injuries, surgeries, and rehabs.

With my high output of work on a daily basis, it’s important for me to make sure I get enough food to match my workload – and quality food at that.

8. How do you define potential?

Potential is a mental and physical ability level that can be reached and surpassed with the right type of consistent work.

9. When did you realize your potential to become a star?

I first realized my potential when I got drafted in high school.

10. How should the people reading this article harness their potential? And how can they become winners at what they do?

It’s important to be consistent, listen to others and be open to change. You also have to work hard and learn to love the difficulty of things. Additionally, I think it’s essential to appreciate what you have and pass on what you’ve learned to others.

11. You’ve committed a significant part of your life to your sport. What specific moments make all your sacrifices worth it?

Getting a scholarship and getting drafted are right up there. Also, getting to MLB and providing for my family.

12. In your opinion, what has been the most pivotal moment of your career?

The most pivotal moments were in high school and college when I learned my potential and fell in love with the work. The drive and work ethic started then.

13. What failure are you proudest of?

There were failures in college, minor leagues, and MLB that I had to overcome, learn from and work through. None in particular stand out because they all shape you into the person you end up being. They’re like pieces to a puzzle; some people just have bigger puzzles to put together that take longer. Keep plugging away.

14. In your opinion, what makes an athlete great?

The things that make an athlete great are humility, consistency, desire, work ethic and being a good teammate.
